MTF 100 Mile Solent Challenge

In August 2006, MTF’s Brian Whitmey and Jon Hill sailed a Wildfire class open keelboat from Bosham, in Chichester Harbour, round the Nab Tower, round the south of the Isle of Wight to the Needles, then into Poole Bay before returning to Bosham through the Solent. The distance covered was 90 Nautical Miles, or around 100 statute miles and so far we have raised £500.00 in sponsorship for Mandiri Training Foundation.

The circuit was challenging in terms of the time it took, the night sailing required and the tides and navigation that needed to be considered. We believe that it is a challenge that other sailors may be interested in undertaking.

We know that all of these statistics are beatable, so we are challenging any dinghy, open keelboat or multihull sailor to do one or more of the following:

· Beat our time over the Solent course!

· Beat our distance over another course!

· Beat our fundraising total!

Although this is most certainly not on the scale of a solo circumnavigation of the globe a la Ellen MacArthur, it is a challenge for any dinghy or open boat sailor and as such should not be taken lightly. Before taking up this challenge, please read our safety notice.

The spirit of this challenge is not to push man and machine to the limits of endurance but is more along the lines of having good, safe fun while challenging oneself and supporting a good cause. For this reason we are not going to be too insistent on the exact course you sail (it needn’t even be in the Solent!) and we will take your word on the time you set. It is not a race in the conventional sense, but we have penciled in some rules and guiding principles which we hope will set the tone of the event.

Help us to raise money to support our work.
